Kobelt Sweeps ITA Midwest Regional; ITA Midwest Recap

After losing the first round at the ITA All-American in singles to USC's Jonny Wang, Ohio State's Peter Kobelt won 10 matches this weekend to take both the singles and doubles titles at the Midwest Regional. Kobelt now has 5 total Midwest Regional titles, as he won the past two singles titles and three doubles titles. He won his freshman year with Matt Allare, his sophomore year with Chase Buchanan, and now his senior year with Kevin Metka. The Buckeyes have now won the last 4 singles titles (Blaz Rola won 2010 and 2011).

Kobelt had a familiar face across the net for both of his finals, as Notre Dame's Greg Andrews was in both finals as well. In the singles final, Andrews took Kobelt the distance as Kobelt won 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (2). A couple of hours later, Andrews and teammate Alex Lawson also took the Buckeye team the distance, coming up short losing 8-7 (5).

With those wins, Kobelt and Metka will be heading to the ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championship at the Billy Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY from November 7-10. Kobelt will now be competing in both the singles and doubles. Losing the championships both in a tiebreaker may be enough to at least get Greg Andrews a singles wildcard to the tournament, and possibly a doubles wildcard as well with Lawson.
