More Americans Advance; Eddie Herr Day 2 Recap

11 of the 32 competitors left in the singles field are American, as over half of the original Americans advanced to the 2nd round. 6'8"  Qualifier Reilly Opelka from the US took out 16 seeded Nino Sedarusic of Croatia 6-4, 6-3. American Alex Rybakov also took out a seeded player, as he took out Russian 6th seed Roman Safiullin 7-5, 6-1. 12th seeded Naoki Nakagawa, who plays various American tournaments since he is a student at IMG Bolletieri Academy, won his first round as well after taking out Phillip Gresk of Poland. Notable Americans to lose today include Spencer Papa and Tommy Paul, who both lost to qualifiers. Speaking of qualifiers, 6 out of the 8 qualifiers are in Wednesday's second round. 3 wildcards are as well.

In the doubles, Alex Zverev (GER) bounced back from his loss Monday and advanced in doubles with partner Andrey Rublev (RUS). Reilly Opelka also did damage in the doubles on Tuesday, as he and partner Catalin Mateas (USA) took out the 7 seeds Kamil Majchrzak (POL) and Alexandre Muller (FRA). Majchrzak was the US Open Junior Doubles Champion (with Martin Redlicki). The Bolletieri team of Anudeep Kodail (USA) and Alejandro Tabilo (CAN) advanced with a three set win, but the same could not be said for the Bolletieri team of Tommy Mylnikov (CAN) and Naoki Nakagawa (JPN) who were the 8 seeds, as they lost to an American wildcard team of AJ Catanzariti and Taylor Fritz. Deiton Baughman paired with Weigiang Zheng of China and advanced after beating a Brazilian team. Baughman/Zheng will play the 2 seeds Filippo Baldi (ITA) and Lucas Miedler (AUT) in the 2nd round. The 3rd seeded team of Michael Mmoh (USA) and Francis Tiafoe (USA), who were the ITF Pan American Champions, advanced to the 2nd round also.
