Altamirano moves on, 4 Americans win; US Open Junior Recap

Question marks surrounded Kalamazoo champion Collin Altamirano coming to New York City. After losing bad to Phillip Kohlschreiber in the Men's Main Draw, the question was how he would respond in the juniors. This was his first junior grand slam and his first round match was against Duck Hee Lee from Korea. After winning in a tight tiebreak, Altamirano went onto win the match 7-6, 6-1. After that win, it is safe to say Altamirano will most likely not be going home early on this week and will be making a run to become the first American since Jack Sock in 2010 to win the US Open Junior Tournament. He will play the 12 seed from Russia, Karen Khachonov, in the 2nd round.

American Michael Redlicki got past Matej Maruscak from Slovakia 6-3, 6-4, as he will play Japanese player Ken Onishi in the 2nd round. UCLA commit MacKenzie McDonald came from behind to beat 7 seeded Guillermo Nunez from Chile 3-6, 7-6, 6-3. Nunez happens to also be McDonald's doubles partner for the tournament. New Yorker Daniel Kernzerman had a big win over Aussie Harry Bourchier 6-1, 6-3. In spite of the success from the Americans, 5th seed Stefan Kozlov fell bad to Austrian Lucas Meidler 6-1, 6-2. A disappointing end to the summer to say the least. Kozlov is the 1 seed in doubles however, teaming with Croatian Borna Coric.
