Redlicki and Altamirano last ones standing; US Open Juniors Recap

The Collin Altamirano-Mackenzie McDonald matchup was so intriguing, the match got put onto Louis Armstrong Stadium today. For me, that meant I actually got to watch the match versus reading the results. Both Americans, UCLA Commit McDonald qualified for the Masters 1000 tourney in Cincinnati, after having received a wildcard into the qualifying draw. Collin Altamirano was the first unseeded player in the history of Kalamazoo to win the national title.

With that being said, McDonald got up a break at 2-0 after a long deuce game in which both players had game points. Both players played fairly consistent throughout the match. However, in the first set Altamirano kept running McDonald around but could not finish the points. The first chance McDonald had in going on offensive, McDonald usually finished the point off. Altamirano finally got on the board at 3-1. Led by McDonald's big serve clocking in at the 120's, McDonald took the first set 6-3. Altamirano struggled in the first set with his versatility, not being able to play defense or get the the next. However in the fairly second set, Altamirano took advantage of his 1 break point to take the set 6-4. Then through a close third set, the Kalamazoo champion kept his junior singles winning streak alive, winning the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. He will play the 1 seed in German Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The matchup between doubles partners Thanasi Kokkinakis and Gianluigi Quinzi is now set up for Friday. Quinzi took out UCLA commit Gage Brymer today. I believe the winner of this match will win the US Open.

In the doubles, 3 Germans are still alive, but only 1 American is still alive going into the semifinals. American Martin Redlicki and his doubles partner Kamil Majchrzak from Poland advanced Thursday after beating 6 seeds Andrey Rublev and Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-1. Redlicki considered this a little revenge after losing to Zverev in singles earlier in the day. The pair will take on the German team of Hannes Wagner and Johannes Haertis in the semifinals. The pair of Thanasi Kokkinakis and Gianluigi Qunizi went down as they lost to Quentin Halys and Frederico Silva.

I am now 43-13 after going 8-0 on Thursday. Here are my picks for Friday:
Taltot vs. Garin
Zverev vs. Altamirano
Coric vs. Halys
Kokkinakis vs. Quinzi

Have a Good Night,
Fry That Chicken
