Granollers continues his run, Bryan Brothers continue to roll; US Open Day 7 Recap

The last American standing Tim Smyczek was up against Spaniard Marcel Granollers in the third round. Granollers has been holding on by a string through the open, as he had one his first 2 matches in come from behind 5 set wins, defeating Jurgen Zopp and Rajeev Ram. There is no way Granollers could handle another one of these. Smyczek took the third set 6-0 against Granollers, I tweeted "If #Granollers could pull another 5 set match out of his butt id definitely be impressed." Well as I kept receiving live scoring, I noticed Granollers then took the 4th set 6-3 and I was starting to get scared that the last American would be taken out. My next scoring update came when Smyczek took a commanding 4-1 lead in the 5th set. So the next time I checked my phone I was checking to make sure Smyczek finished the job. He didn't. Granollers tied it up at 5-5 in the 5th, eventually taking the 5th set 7-5 and the match. It is a credit to Granollers heart and fitness being able to pull a 3rd match out in a row in 5 sets. He will play top seeded Novak Djokovic in the 4th round.

My next covered match was with a little Davis Cup action in doubles between the best team in the world, the Bryan Brothers, against Canadians Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil. This was an interesting match because of Nestor (former world number 1 in doubles) taking on the Bryan's so early in a tournament. This was because Nestor partnered with Pospisil to prepare for their upcoming Davis Cup tie with Serbia. So with that, Nestor understand he was essentially forfeiting a seed since he was teaming with a partner with a much lower ranking. So onto the match, in the first set both teams had their chances to break (with a few break points each). But no team could break the serve of the other team, sending the 1st set into a tiebreak. In the tiebreak it was all Nestor and Pospisil, as they both stepped up large winning the tiebreak 7-1. In the second set, the Bryan brothers switched which side they returned on and the Canadian pair went up a break at 4-3, but the Bryan's broke right back. With Nestor's serve struggling, the Bryan's broke him again at 6-5 to take the second set 7-5. From there the Bryan's took control to win the match 6-7, 7-5, 6-2. The Bryans dream of being the second team to win the Calendar Grand Slam is still alive. Also it would be their 5th consecutive Grand Slam victory in a row. The Bryan's will play Great Britain pair Colin Fleming and Jonathan Marray in the quarterfinals.

I went 7-1 on Sunday with my picks and here are my picks for Monday:
Federer vs. Robredo
Kohlschreiber vs. Nadal
Gasquet vs. Raonic
Tipsarevic vs. Ferrer

Have a Great Labor Day,
Fry That Chicken
